Brain change requires three essential conditions: Focus, Challenge, and Reward.


Focus - When we focus our attention on a particular task or problem, the nucleus basalis, a deeply-nestled region of the brain, secretes a substance called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine triggers the brain to hold on to the memories being formed. The more we focus, the more we remember.

Challenge - By focusing on a challenging task for a sufficient period of time we encourage the brain to stretch, and to devote more resources to the brain functions being called upon.

Reward - Success at a challenging task creates a sense of achievement and satisfaction, triggering the release of dopamine (the "happy" chemical). Acetylcholine and Dopamine together stimulate new neural growth and brain plasticity.

The more we exercise our working memory the larger it grows both physically and in the number of neural connections.1 Researchers at Sweden's prestigious Karolinska Institutet, a European medical university, have demonstrated that intensive training of working memory produces measurable changes in the brain,2 direct evidence of brain plasticity.

Related studies show that working memory is not limited to six or seven items as thought previously thought.3 Karolinska Institutet researchers4 have found that a period of brain training improves working memory as indicated by the pink dotted line on the chart above.

Susanne Jaeggi and Martin Buschkuehl posited that training of working memory could lead to increased fluid intelligence5 by reducing the working memory demands being placed on the brain's processing capacity.

Their study recorded increases in fluid intelligence for all participants of more than 40% in comparison to a control group who did not train. (The researchers calculated fluid intelligence as the number of correct answers given to a standard set of IQ test questions6 in a constrained time period.)
